Good night, America, how are you?
It’s not just the guns. Sure, that’s part of it. That’s a big goddamn part of it. But it’s more than that. There’s an ugliness in this nation of ours that is being allowed to propagate. An intolerant free-floating hate of all things not like it. This nebulous sickness that has infected mass media, politics, social media, business. And as it metastasizes across every vital organ of this country it is armed to the teeth… because, you know, ‘murica. A psychopathic monster is infecting the small-minded and they all have guns. Recipe for…. just turn on your tv. Then turn it off.
You see it in the foaming hate-speech of Donald Trump – the fact that he even polls at higher than a percentage point… It bubbles up in the political dysfunction in Washington. It’s in the racist obstruction perpetrated by the GOP against the first African American president… the killing in the name of ______… the unabashed accumulation of wealth by the nation’s richest while people starve to death or waste away from a disease for lack of insurance…. the ineffectual political triangulation of the Democrats… the commodification of every goddamn thing…. the dick-pill adds during family TV…. the violence of police… the violence against police… the Lexus December-to-Remember adds where yuppie families gift each other $50,000 luxury vehicles… the bloodsport money-hungry brain destruction of the NFL ….the disintegration of kindness….. the dumbing down of discourse…. the shortening attention span…. the hate.
It’s easy to get pulled down by all of that. It’s easy to get swept away. The cynical anger scoffs at my spiritual yearning for goodness…. but I have to believe. Maybe that’s why I’ve grown to hate the holiday season. It’s mindless brainwashed contrived crap. Don’t believe from Thanksgiving to Xmas… believe every day. And act like it every day. Leave every person you encounter at least as happy as they were before you crossed his/her path if not happier. Beat back this cancerous beast. Put down your guns. Let that guy merge into your lane. Thank the lady who waited an extra beat to hold the door for you. Beat back the darkness with light. It’s all you can do. Because, unchecked, it threatening to destroy everything good about America. The cancerous states of America on parade in the media is a sick dystopian joke. Flip the script. Fuck that. I’ll try. I swear to God I’ll try.
